I try to follow the discussions that in some context can help me understand more of the evolution that, “Connecting People” (great Nokia slogan), have brought about the past + 20 years. The past five years or so I have seen that more and more of the public debate involve the word digitalization. What is this all about? Digging into some of the definitions used, I see at least for me, even more complex and difficult words used to explain what everybody must understand is the only path going forward.
Here are some examples that might help explain what we are up against. One definition of digitalization can be found at the following url http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/digitalization.html and yet an other from the great Gartner http://www.gartner.com/it-glossary/digitalization/ .I do not know if this helped much in explaining what this is about more than words.
For the ones that have read some of the other posts by me might have understood that I like the lower layers in the OSI stack (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model ). The reason is rather simple, without the physical layers in the production the talks about digitalization will just be words. I ask myself every day; how hard can it be to understand that without “roads” it is more difficult to drive?
Going digital actually means you have to digg into the physical parts of the Eco system. In my world this means that most of the so called experts out there, need to go back to school to learn how the 1 and 0 actually show up on a “digital surface”.
Put short, we need more roads (fiber) and more efficient factories (Data centers) and the “fuel” to make the fundamentals as efficient as possible. There are people out there that really understand this game, to bad they are not “shouting” in media and telling some “experts” to go back to school 😉
