Late 2016 there was released a report on a big chunk of the Norwegian fiber networks. The report was initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to get an end to end overview of the dark fiber situation in Norway.
The report was put in writing by the consultancy company Nexia Management Consulting AS and the Norwegian Communications Authority together and ment to help in the development of a Norwegian datacenter Industry. Norway as many know have an enormous surplus of renewable energy based on hydro. The report it self is written in Norwegian (sorry), and can be found at this location as an PDF document.
There are many different datacenter initiatives progressing in Norway and all of them have the need for digital roads to be able to connect to the outside world. The map pasted below is taken from the above report and show some of the initiatives.
As can be seen from the picture there are real possibilities to cover most “buzz” words within the digital diversified and redundant discussion if that is the chosen path. Now with this map and then adding the current, planed and free capacities in the map below.
The different colors of interest are the green, yellow and dotted green, whom all show that there are possibilities to meet different needs from the players in the industry. This is looking good from my point of view. Then why is it troublesome to be like our friends in Sweden and now more and more Denmark towards the more and more increasing demand for efficient compute power based on renewable energy, or at least as efficient as possible. We in the Nordics have some weather that help keep cooling costs down, some say Norway has 9 months of bad skiing. So the above given maybe the next map can give an indication on the players in this marked.
There are some great companies in this map and this given I believe there are things that can be done to really have Norway on the Global compute arena at a cost level many would envy us. The best even, all on renewable surplus energy from our natural batteries, the dams that collect all the water and can be adjusted any time. The challenges with wind and sun in this region, well they are not always reliable 😉
So with all this said and everyone that are interested in digital production and the important elements needed to do it all, start calling the brands and locations mentioned in the report and put nicely into the pictures in this post.
In the need of more insight, give me a call! 🙂
regards
