In my small world where The great Internet has been a very important part of social networking and business development for me the past twenty years. Now I wonder where this great network developed by people with an intent to spread communication, information, knowledge and business across borders will end?
It seems like some parts of the world that believe they can “control” the world via monitoring get more and more politicians to believe data collection is the only solution to all threats. I guess the main issue here is total lack of know-how on both the surveillance side and the politicians just letting go off at least some fundamental rights some off us take as given. Now we are heading back to the dark ages even in Norway.
There was a report published on digital vulnerabilities in society last fall and now the follow-up has been set within the Ministry of Defence, to take a closer look at the options to sniff all digital traffic into Norway.
I guess it had to come after series of arguments from “experts” on threats and what for me often look like a bunch off followers that have no opinion or understanding off their own.
For some time I have looked at solutions to “clean up the Internet”. In my world this has been an attempt to protect the real users of the Internet and not have to think twice about who is listening in with governmental “wildcard” access…
I wonder how one can help these different initiatives so that the “monitors” can be flooded with what they seem to need but at the same time protect the fundamental right to have a dialog “one on one” without someone believe they have a need to listen in..
Maybe a solution on this can be authentication mechanisms that takes care of the different LDAP profiles ;-). Would be interesting to see if we can track the “monitors” and also automate the old system within abuse/crime and Telco with court orders before handing out information to the “authorities”. Guess this is not enough to protect?
It is going to be interesting to see what arguments are used to scare the politicians this time? Hopefully the just set project set together with some people with common sense and the ability to see more than one side can suggest solutions that does not restrict the usage of The great Internet as we know it to be!
